Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated and experienced seasonal FireSmart labourer to join our team. This

position is ideal for individuals with a strong background in forestry, arboriculture, and chainsaw

operations; and who are prepared to work in diverse weather conditions including winter.

Key Responsibilities

● Chainsaw Operation: Use chainsaws to clear vegetation, cut firebreaks, and remove hazardous trees or branches. Ensure safe and efficient operation according to industry standards.

● Forestry Work: Assist with various forestry tasks including thinning forests, managing vegetation, and preparing areas for fire mitigation. Identifying different plant species for preservation or removal.

● Arborist Duties: Apply arborist knowledge to assess tree health, perform pruning, and manage tree-related issues in fire-prone areas

● Winter Work: Adapt to working in winter conditions including snow and ice, while maintaining safety and productivity.

● FireSmart Tasks: Implement FireSmart practices such as creating defensible space around properties, clearing combustible materials, and assisting with community education.

● Team Collaboration: Work effectively as part of a team, follow supervisors’ directions and coordinate with fellow team members to achieve project goals.

● Customer Service: Interact with stakeholders, clients and the wider community to ensure their opinions are heard and their interests preserved, while educating members of the public of the importance of fuel mitigation/hazard reduction and FireSmart work. Represent Nordic Tree Care and its values.

Qualifications

● Experience: Proven experience with chainsaw operation, landscaping and forestry work. Experience in arboriculture or related fields is highly desirable.

● Skills: Proficiency in using chainsaws and other forestry equipment. Strong knowledge of tree species, health assessment, and fire behavior. Small motor operation and maintenance. Working around heavy equipment.

● Physical Fitness: Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks including lifting and carrying.

● Safety: Knowledge of and adherence to safety protocols and best practices for chainsaw use and forestry operations.

● Certifications: Relevant certifications such as chainsaw/power tool safety, first aid and/or arborist qualifications are a big plus. Please list all relevant past and present courses and certifications.

● Adaptability: Willingness to work in winter conditions and adjust to varying work environments.

● Outdoor skills: An indivdiual who holds experience with outdoor activities will likely succeed in this role. Having knowledge and experience working in cold weather conditions and in remote and backcountry environments will serve the successful canditate well.
